After leaving Sage to spy on Mrs. Wilson at the Broken Broom, Ember dropped by her house to change for her date. Sure, she and Cedric weren’t going out anyplace fancy, but grilled steaks at his place still sounded pretty romantic, and she wanted to wear something nicer than the flannel shirt and jeans she’d put on for that day’s work.

When she got home, she found Kali waiting for her.

“I’ve got info,” Kali said excitedly.

“About the case?”

Kali trilled merrily in confirmation. “That secretary, the one who was apparently having an affair with Jeff Wilson?”

“You went and spied on her?” No wonder Ember hadn’t seen Kali for a while. She must have traveled pretty far.

Although Ember suspected Kali had her own magical methods of covering a great deal of space in very little time.

“Turns out the affair was true,” Kali reported. “I heard the secretary talking about it with a friend. She was really cut up about it. Jeff’s death, I mean. I guess she’d gone through his desk and found papers that proved he was going to be filing for divorce from Jennie.”

“Divorce means no double indemnity benefits,” Ember muttered.

“What?” Kali asked.

So, as Ember got changed into a nice dress and stylish flats, she told Kali what she had overheard at the Broken Broom.

“That’s very suspicious,” Kali said once Ember had finished.

“It is,” Ember agreed. “And I wish I had time to talk about it all, but if I take any longer I’m going to be late!”

The truth was she was running a little early. But after the chaotic day she’d had, Ember was looking forward to being at Cedric’s place and spending a little time with him.
